The Meaning and Origin of the Purple, Green and Gold in Mardi Gras
The official Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold hold special meaning. The purple color represents justice; green, faith; and gold, power. These colors were selected as the official colors of Mardi Gras in 1872 by Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff, brother of the heir to the Russian throne, who was visiting New Orleans. The Krewe of Rex also established the meaning behind theses colors in 1872 during the Rex Parade theme "Symbolism of Colors."
