The History of Mardi Gras

Many believe that the origins of Mardi Gras can actually be traced back to Medieval Europe yet there is no written record of how we made the transition from then to the Mardi Gras that we know and love today.  The Mardi Gras as it is currently celebrated is definitively New Orleans however it was introduced to the area by French settlers.   The French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d-Iberville and his brother Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville landed directly south of New Orleans in 1699 and called this point "Pointe du Mardi Gras."  Bienville would go on to establish "Fort Louis de la Louisiane" in the area now known as Mobile, Alabama as the first capital of French Louisiana in 1702.  These settlers in Mobile celebrated the first Mardi Gras in 1703.
